Kristin Oppenheim's Where Did You Sleep Last Night? is an eight channel sound piece, performed by the artist a capella and remixed in the studio into a multi layered lyrical twist of the folk song originally recorded by Leadbelly and later Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Renowned for her sound work, Oppenheim's work is a hypnotic, sweeping, disorienting retelling of a story of mystery, desire and deceit. Previously installed in the auditorium of the Oscar-Niemeyer-designed French Communist Party HQ, the resulting recording relates both the song?s melancholy to the utopian associations of the architecture as well as conveys its acoustic dimensions, highlighting the particularities of physical space.
