Duncan Grant (1885-1978), a member of the Bloomsbury Group and among the first British Post-Impressionists, had a long career which has defied easy classification. When he died, he left a large body of unexhibited, unpublished work which he'd kept in an oversize envelope marked "private"; the upcoming exhibition of his work at 303 Gallery will he the first extensive look at these private drawings and paintings.

These works, which are often done on the backs of envelopes, newspapers and hook jackets, address many of the same concerns as those of the great artists of Classical antiquity: an interest in the male body, its idealization and movement, and the choice of subject matter depicting nude male figures engaged in sports, dance and other activities.
